THROUGH a generous donation from South32, the Swana School and Assessment Centre for Disabled Children in Empangeni added several much needed upgrades to their facilities.
School founder Nomakhaya Swana, Principal S Ngema, pupils and representatives of South32 unveiled the new improvements which included ramps, paving, sewage system upgrades, all-weather awnings and an extra classroom.
South32 was praised for their contributions and staff and pupils expressed their appreciation through several song and dance items.
Ngema said the school is the only one of its kind in northern KZN, which also provides boarding facilities for the children.
‘Many of the children come from deep rural areas and the parents pay what they can afford.
‘The school specialises in teaching students with learning, behavioural, mental, medical, physical or intellectual disabilities,’ Ngema said.
‘Special needs schools have smaller class sizes, a low student-to-teacher ratio and a more structured and consistent learning environment.
‘At Swana School all the staff are trained to understand the particular needs of the children, and there is occupational, speech and physio therapists attending to the children as many of them have both physical and mental disabilities.’
