Company’s community injection significant
‘For four decades RBM’s operations have been deeply interwoven with the well-being of its host communities’

THIS year, Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) celebrates its 40th anniversary, but the road to this milestone has recently been littered with obstacles as community members on several occasions halted operations with violent protests.
Following the latest disruption on 12 August by a group of KwaMbonambi youth members, RBM Managing Director Mpho Mothoa clarified the company’s extensive role in uplifting its four host communities – Mbonambi, Mkhwanazi, Sokhulu and Dube.
‘For four decades RBM’s operations have been deeply interwoven with the well-being of its host communities.
‘In the 1970s, when the staff on the mine numbered just a few dozen people, they ensured that its small clinic was made available to community members.
‘The staff volunteered their time at local schools on weekends and after work.
‘As RBM and the communities have grown, that relationship has continued on a much larger scale.
‘Our social investment programme now totals more than R100-million a year.
‘This is money that goes directly towards education, health, agriculture and poverty alleviation, as well as houses and roads.’
