Majority of SA engineers unregistered
Engineering Council of SA addresses sector concerns
DESPITE the benefits endorsement by the Engineering Council of SA (ECSA) provide engineers, 52% of professionals in the field are still unregistered.
Only 38% are signed up, with the remaining 10% of SA’s qualified engineers having left the industry for a different profession.
Speaking at a consultation meeting in Richards Bay on Monday, ECSA CEO Sipho Madonsela asked local engineers why so many economically active practitioners choose not to apply.
‘It may not be mandatory, but for safety reasons, among others, I believe it is necessary.
‘Being registered secures public trust and confidence.
‘There is a growing preference for registered persons and institutions to procure engineering work.
‘Most state organisations, including Transnet, Eskom and the SA National Roads Agency insist on registered engineers to ensure competency and reliable services.’
He said the almost 50 000 engineers who are certified enjoy international mobility and recognition of their qualifications in the USA, China, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and other countries.
