The art of living off the land

Children from disadvantaged families and childheaded households were targeted for the project

OLD Mutual has joined hands with the uThungulu Education Department to teach pupils the ropes of planting their own vegetables.

After being identified by the uThungulu Education District Director David Chonco and Old Mutual Regional Manager MN Khathi, children from disadvantaged families and childheaded households were targeted for the project.

Old Mutual donated vegetable tunnels, seedlings and expertise to Kati Primary, Engweni Primary and Masakhane High schools.

A teacher to coordinate the project was then identified from each of the schools.

Vegetables such spinach, cabbage, onions and beetroot today provide food for children from child-headed households, some supplement the school’s feeding scheme and some are sold to local people to raise funds for the school.

‘The money we make from selling some of the veggies we use to buy school equipment and school uniforms for our needy scholars.’ said Masakhane School Principal AS Mthabela.
