Shelter empowers abused women

This is the second shelter to be opened in the Zululand region after one was established in Jozini

THE first women’s shelter for victims of abuse and gender-based violence in Richards Bay, Siyabonga Shelter is now fully operational.

And it is already a positive factor in helping women escape from abusive environments and empowering them with support and tools to change their circumstances.

Situated at the House of Shalom, the new facility was opened in December after the temporary shelter was closed in March last year to make way for the erection of the suitable new premises.

This is the second shelter to be opened in the Zululand region after one was established in Jozini.

The facility, which can house up to 10 women with their children under the age of 10, is manned by three staff members: Centre Manager Julie Heroli, Social Worker Duduzile Mahilinza and Social Auxiliary Worker Thembelihle Mhlongo.

According to Mahilinza, the centre accommodates victims of crime and and domestic violence and assists them with shelter, essential items and toiletries, counselling, psycho-support and vocational support to help them acquire a skill to generate income to sustain themselves.

‘The centre also facilitates several outreach programmes in the surrounding communities, educating people on domestic violence and how they can seek help.

‘We also visit schools, clinics, senior citizens clubs and women’s group and have launched a men and boys campaign to encourage males to take a stand against violence on women and children and also speak out if they are victims.’

With statistics estimating that one in three women worldwide has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime, the need for a shelter was vital and has been welcomed by the community.

Sustainability
The House of Shalom also incorporates the Ikhayalethu Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC) which provides residential care to children found by the children’s court to be in need of care and protection.

The institution has been running for 24 years and continues to serve the needs of orphaned and vulnerable children and women.
