Support for senior citizens clubs
The seniors citizens project was rolled out last month

THE Zululand Observer’s charity arm, DICE (Do I Care Enough?), supports local senior citizens clubs with a monthly luncheon.
The first luncheon was held for the Aquadene Seniors Club last week.
The seniors citizens project was rolled out last month and DICE Coordinator Sharon Mdletshe said luncheon clubs for the eldery were identified in Madlazini, Mzingazi, Ngwelezane and Aquadene.
‘Our seniors play a vital role in society and these meetings provide a platform where they can come together as elderly folk to socialise, participate in activities such as health and fitness programmes and enjoy a lunch with their friends.
‘We want to ensure they have a meal when they come to the meetings as many of the pensioners walk long distances and spend several hours at the clubs.
‘Through these meetings we want to see the police and government departments address the seniors on their rights, where they can report crime and seek help with any concerns.
‘For many of the seniors these meetings are an escape from the challenges in their lives,’ said Mdletshe.
Help others
Mdletshe challenged the Aquadene Senior Citizens to help support other gogos by joining the DICE Winter Warmth blanket project.
She highlighted her recent visit to the Ntambanana area where pensioners were suffering with no water and a high unemployment rate. They cannot even start vegetable gardens because they have no access to water.
‘They are involved with bead making and grass mats weaving, but they have nowhere to sell them, so DICE will be promoting their crafts at local flea markets to help generate funds.
‘The situation is dire in our rural communities and seniors from our suburban areas, who are in a much better situation, can help by knitting blankets which we can donated to those in needy communities.
‘Just as DICE is supporting your luncheon we would like you to pay it forward by using your skills to knit squares for our blanket project.
‘If you can start a vegetable garden, we can also share that produce with other needy pensioners.’
