Old Mill the top bridge builders

Thirteen high schools from urban, township and rural areas participated

HIGH school pupils from across Zululand put their bridge building skills to the test last week.

The Unizul Science Centre, in collaboration with the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE), hosted the annual bridge building competition at the ZCBF Community Park.

Thirteen high schools from urban, township and rural areas participated, with 26 teams of students constructing bridges out of sticks and glue.

Various weights ranging from 500 grams to several kilograms were used to test the strength of their bridges and Old Mill High School, represented by Njabulo Mkhize, Cebsile Nxumalo and Sakhile Mazibuko. emerged as the master ‘builders’.

Their bridge withstood a mass of 50kg before giving in.

All three judges are qualified engineers.

The three top teams will represent Zululand at the national finals in Gauteng later this month.

Aquadene Secondary School took the runners-up position and Grantleigh College claimed third prize.
