Bay port secures first place

Richards Bay's port awarded as most secure harbour in South Africa

SECURITY measures at the Port of Richards Bay were recently honoured as the best in the country.

Zululand’s port won the Best Performing South African Commercial Port Award in terms of International Ship and Port Security Implementation at the World Maritime Day held in Kimberley.

South Africa’s eight ports were rated according to a week-long security audit, which takes place every four years, to ensure compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code.

The strict regulations governed by the International Maritime Organisation have to be met to allow international trade through the harbours.

This is the first year awards have been given in relation to compliance with ISPS protocols.

Transnet released a statement to commend the personnel involved.

‘Congratulations to the security department for ensuring the safety of all port users and for promoting economic growth. Thank you for keeping the port’s flag flying high,’ it said.

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) Port Operations General Manager Herbert Msagala also encouraged other ports to ‘up their game’ when it comes to safety.

‘I would like to congratulate the top three ports on their sterling work, with special recognition of the Port of Richards Bay for taking a first place award.

‘This is an indication that these ports are committed in ensuring that our ports are safe and secured said Msagala.
