IN an effort to identify measures to combat escalating crime in Brackenham, more than 400 residents attended a public crime awareness meeting last week to raise their concerns.
The Brackenham community has suffered severe criminal incidents in recent months, including rape, assault, house robberies, theft of motor vehicles and drug crimes.
Residents met with representatives of the Richards Bay police, Richards Bay Community Policing Forum cluster, Brackenham Community Crime Watch and Public Safety and Security Liaison to find ways of curbing crime in the suburb.
After discussions, it was resolved that a special crime task team be established, the current dysfunctional Bracknham CPF committee be dissolved and an interim coordinating body formed between the SAPS and community to enhance communication.
The community was encouraged to stand together against crime and to refrain from buying stolen goods.
