Identity document collection warning

Uncollected smart ID cards will be destroyed - so get yours now from Home Affairs

WITH all Home Affairs offices open on voting day on Wednesday, this will be a good opportunity for citizens to fetch uncollected identity documents and smart ID cards – or face the consequences.

More than 4 000 of these lie gathering dust in various offices in the uThungulu District after they were applied for by citizens who, for whatever reason, have failed to collect them, despite SMS notifications.

‘We have been lenient until now, but after the local government elections, all identity documents and smart ID cards that have been awaiting collection for a long period will be sent to head office in Pretoria for destruction,’ said Home Affairs District Manager, Sikhosiphi Dlamini.

‘This is done to protect citizens against any fraudulent activity.

‘Therefore, it will be the responsibility of the person to lodge a new application and pay the prescribed amount where necessary.’
