Doc JC celebrates 80 years of fame

RENOWNED Richards Bay historian, author, politician and business leader, Dr JC van der Walt, celebrated his 80th birthday on Thursday.

He has been a prominent citizen since he moved from Pretoria to the town with his family some 46 years ago.

JC was elected as the first mayor of Richards Bay and was also a founding member of the Richards Bay Rugby Club, Afrikaanse Sakekamer, Umfolozi College and the Richards Bay Ski Boat Club, and was General Manager at the then Alusaf Bayside Smelter.

He has always had a healthy love and respect for nature and the environment and among others taught his four daughters how to fish, braai, catch crayfish, snorkel and how to drive 4x4s.

Not only did he achieve a Doctors degree in Industrial Psychology, he also passed on his academic leaning and willingness to work hard to his four daughters, who all attained teaching diplomas – with one going on to emulate his doctorate.

His family is proud of his achievements in the field of history, especially with regard to his authorship of the books ‘Zululand True Stories’, ‘Child Slavery in South Africa’ and ‘Rebels of Slagtersnek’.

‘Above all, a wonderful husband, father and father-in-law, and we all wish him many more years of fulfilment,’ said daughter Ria Enslin.
