Election day procedures
Be fully prepared when it comes to casting your vote at the Local Government Elections this week

VOTERS who will be casting their votes on 3 August in the local government elections must remember that they will receive three ballot papers.
Voters will receive a white/grey ward ballot paper to elect a ward councillor of their choice who will serve on the local council;
A yellow ballot paper will be used to elect the political party of your choice, from which the parties – depending on the level of support they receive – will select proportional representation (PR) councillors to serve on the local council (ie uMhlathuze, uMlalazi, uMfolozi).
Voters will also receive a green ballot paper. Voters again vote for the party of their choice, from which parties – depending on the support received – will elect their proportional representatives, which will make up 40% of the District Municipality’s councillors. The other 60% will be appointed by the local municipality councillors.
In the voting station
These steps will be followed:
The voter shows his or her identity document (ID) at the door. The ID is scanned and a slip is printed
The voter’s name is crossed off the voter’s roll
The voter’s hand is examined to check it has not been marked/inked
The voter’s left thumb must be marked by drawing a short line on the thumb and the nail at the point where the nail
meets the cuticle, with visible indelible ink that cannot be washed off. The thumb is marked to ensure that the voter
does not vote more than once
The voter’s ID will be stamped
The voter is given three ballot papers. An official stamp must be put at the back of the ballot papers
The voter enteres the voting booth and makes a cross/mark for a party/candidate on each of the ballot papers.
