Disability sport league takes off

The league aims to equip athletes living with disabilities for inter-district tournaments in various sporting activities.

THE Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) has invested R100 000 in sporting equipment towards establishing a DISSA (Disability in Sport South Africa) League which will consist of various sport codes in the uThungulu District.

The league aims to equip athletes living with disabilities for inter-district tournaments in netball, volleyball, football, basketball, athletics, table tennis, dibeka and goal ball.

According to uThungulu District DSR Manager, Matilda Chiya, the equipment will be handed over to disability forums in all the local municipalities to upgrade skills in preparation for competing in inter-district tournaments.

‘We want all our leagues developed in preparation for our first inter-district tournament against iLembe District.

‘As a district we decided that we will not keep competition internal, but select our best teams to compete against other districts.’
