Sod turned for R30m road upgrade

This long awaited R30-million rand project is destined to improve local economic activities, as well as improve the quality of public and private transport.

THERE was great excitement at Mandlazini on Tuesday afternoon when the City of uMhlathuze introduced residents to the contractor who will upgrade and tar the main road to the agri-village.

This long awaited R30-million rand project awarded to Scribante Construction is destined to improve local economic activities, as well as improve the quality of public and private transport.

City Deputy Mayor Zethu Gumbi, Speaker Mfundo Mthenjana and Cllr Nicholas Madondo shared with Induna Mpanza and residents the history of the development of Mandlazini and urged co-operation to ensure the road gets delivered on time.

‘It is envisaged that a minimum of 40 jobs will be created for local labour, with the duration of each job varying according to the task, but on average the jobs will extend for about 50% of the contract period,’ said Mthenjana.

‘This labour will largely be employed by means of local sub-contractors for tasks such as traffic accommodation and storm water pipe laying.

‘It is envisaged that a minimum of three local sub-contractors will be employed and possibly more.’

Scope of works
The project comprises the upgrade of a 3.6km long bus route in Mandlazini to a surfaced road with piped storm water and sidewalks.

The scope and extent of the works includes:
• Establishment of the contractor’s camp and plant on site and the removal of all site establishment on the completion of the contract;
• Rehabilitation of Road B001 from a 6.4m wide seal surfaced road to a 6.4m wide asphalt surfaced road, which is 1.9km long;
• Upgrade of existing Ring Road A from a gravel road to a 7m wide asphalt surfaced road, 1.7 km long;
• Provision of piped storm water infrastructure, 1.3 km long, along with associated kerbs, channels, outlets and culverts;
• Provision of 1.2m wide concrete sidewalks, 4km long;
• Provision of 3.6km of optic fibre sleeves;
• Provision of ducts for future street lighting;
• Provision of six bus bays and shelters, with two of them being on Road B001 and four being on Ring Road A.
