Cacophony of noise too much to bear

My complaint may seem trivial compared to the ones regarding the noise at the Central Sports Complex, but nevertheless.

We moved into our house in Veldenvlei in January 1992.

Our property was adjoined by a stand of blue gum trees and we enjoyed a quiet and peaceful first six months.

Then one day we heard chainsaws and earth moving equipment and within a few days the trees were all gone.

Building work started and the a service station was built.

The workshop was leased to a person who did panel beating, who banged car bodies until 1am in the morning.

We reported this to the health department and the work then ceased at 5pm.

Peace once more – or so we thought!

Then the fast food outlet was opened and operated 24 hours a day.

When all the other fast food outlets in the CBD closed at around 9 or 10pm, this was the only place to get food.

The public soon caught onto this and the late night partygoers and minibuses loaded with passengers would arrive after midnight and buy food, after which they would continue to party, turning the volume on the sound systems to the maximum.

This went on until 4am in some cases.

To add to the above there is also the air compressor which starts up and runs almost every 5-10 minutes day and night and is very loud at night when all the day noise is absent.

To add to the complaints there is the fuel tanker which sometimes arrives at 11pm to deliver fuel.

The heavy metal covers on the underground tanks are lifted and simply allowed to fall onto the concrete, creating more noise.

After complaining, without success, to the management on numerous occasions regarding these matters, we approached the councillor for this area with a petition on two occasions, signed by all residents in the immediate vicinity of the garage.

It is now 2013 and although some of our concerns have been addressed, others, like the compressor, are still a big problem.

There is also the car wash where some customers arrive at 5.30am on a Sunday morning to be the first in line and then also turn on their music for the whole neighbourhood to hear.

Surely something can be done about this?
