Bridgitte heads off for glory

Hold thumbs for Zululand's golden girl Bridgitte Hartley as she goes for gold in Rio.

RICHARDS Bay canoe star Bridgette Hartley flew off on Saturday for Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she will complete her final training camp before going for gold at the Rio Olympics.

Grateful for all the support and messages from friends and family in Zululand after her selection to the SA Olympic squad was announced, Bridgette was proud to again be representing not just her country, but also the City of uMhlathuze and the uThungulu District.

‘This is still home to me. I miss the Bay,’ she told the Zululand Observer on Friday.

‘I always look forward to seeing the friendly faces, especially out at the backline when I get the chance to surf between my paddling itinerary.

‘I will most definitely drop in when I return home after the Rio Olympics to visit my friends.’

Last time that happened, Bridgitte returned with a magnificent bronze medal.

She hopes to do even better this time out as she competes on 17 and 18 August, towards the latter stages of the Games.

‘Wish me luck, Zululand!’
