Iron Man entries pour in

The rapid uptake of entries indicates the growth of the sport and popularity of the Durban event.

ENTRIES for the 2017 Standard Bank Iron Man Durban triathlon is officially open.

Local athletes are urged to sign up for the popular event that takes place on Sunday, 18 June next year at Suncoast Casino.

The 2017 edition will feature a 1.9km swim, 90.1km bike ride and 21.1km road run.

One needs to enter quickly before the event is sold out, as a record 3 028 athletes from 34 different countries have already entered.

The rapid uptake of entries indicates the growth of the sport and popularity of the Durban event.

Since the inaugural event held last year, household names like John Smit, John Slade, Stefan Terblanche, Letshego Zulu and Caroline Wostmann all attempted their first iron man and will be returning next year.

This year’s event saw over 1 100 first-time athletes participating, with 1 300 first-timers in 2015.

General entries close at midnight, 3 February.

The cost is R3 000 per entry and R3 850 for late entries (4 February to 10 April).

A one day licence fee is payable at registration. Details can be found on www.triathlon.co.za.

Athletes must be 18 years or older on race day.

Once registration is sold out no additional entries will be accepted, athletes involved in selling or transferring slots will be banned from racing Iron Man South Africa races for two years and registration fees must be paid within 24 hours otherwise entries will be cancelled.
