UPDATE: Mtuba murder suspect arrested

Gawel, a rep for ABI, was shot six times in May at a tuck shop near Khula Village at Mtubatuba.

MTUBATUBA police are celebrating a major breakthrough following the arrest of a 28-year-old man in connection with the murder of Andreas Gawel.

Gawel, a rep for ABI, was shot six times in May at a tuck shop near Khula Village at Mtubatuba.

The 52-year-old died on the scene.

At first it was believed the motive for the killing was robbery, but police later confirmed that nothing was stolen.

Mtubatuba detectives, together with uMkhanyakude Tactical Response Team members, on Sunday swooped down on one of the suspects at a hostel in KwaMashu.

‘The suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol with 13 rounds of live ammunition,’ said KZN SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.

‘The suspect took the detectives to his home in Mtubatuba where a R1 rifle with 42 rounds of live ammunition and 18 rounds for a 303 rifle were found.’

Police confirmed the suspect was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and the murder of Gawel.

‘The recovered firearms will also be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain whether they were used in other crimes,’ said Lt Col Zwane.

While this suspect will soon appear before a Mtubatuba Magistrate, police continue hunting for the second suspect.
