Hand-picked as the cream of emerging academic talent in the region, the group aged between 16 and 19 were given a formal send-off by Mayor Thamsanqa Ntuli on Wednesday.

‘We would like to do more to support our youth, especially in education, as they will return to improve the lives of the community.

‘During our three years in office we have managed to spread some light and I want to reassure the community that this is not about the elections – it is something for the future of their children,’ said Ntuli.

Gugulethu Xulu and Ntando Qwabe left on Monday from King Shaka Airport to Johannesburg and from there to Savitribai Pshule Pune University in Mumbai.

Gugulethu will complete a three year B Pharmacy degree, while Ntando will study mechanical engineering over four years.

The second group of six leave today bound for the same university where Asibonge Biyela, Philani Ntombela, Nosipho Ngubane and Thobeka Shabalala will all study pharmacy, while Nothando Ngema will complete a B Sc degree and Zenzo Sithole will tackle a masters degree in education.
