Rain, mud and ‘vasbyt’

The organisers of the race, the third in the Bell Big Five Challenge, closed the second 25km loop of the 50km route owing to the bad conditions in the area.

THIS year’s Buildit Kwambo Lion MTB race saw a field of 405 riders taking on the mud and rain around KwaMbonambi for a gruelling 50 and 25km race on Sunday.

The organisers of the race, the third in the Bell Big Five Challenge, closed the second 25km loop of the 50km route owing to the bad conditions in the area.

This meant that the 50km riders had to complete the 25km route twice.

Apart from a few bruised egos, no injuries were reported.

The old school will remember the ‘vasbyt’ days and Sunday’s race needed that extra bit of guts to pull one through.

It was not so much the track that was an issue, it was the rain which turned the route into mud and in places even streams.

But then that is what mountain biking is all about.

One rider, Craig Hallett from Hillcrest, posted a comment on his Facebook page saying, ‘By far the hardest race I have done. ‘All I wanted to do is quit and give up, but at the end of the day it’s not a option.’
