Sajana lives on the edge
She has only been playing the sport for six years and says the teamwork and camaraderie attracted her to the game.

IT takes a gutsy person to be the last line of defence in modern day sport.
One such brave heart is Grantleigh’s first girls hockey team goalkeeper Sajana Nagessur.
She has only been playing the sport for six years and says the teamwork and camaraderie attracted her to the game.
She fancies living life on the edge, having done bungee jumping and hopes to go shark cage diving and skydiving in the near future.
‘I enjoy the mental obstacles there is to keeping. I have to put my body on the line to protect my box whereas everyone else is taught to avoid or dodge a ball flying towards them at high speed.
Being a keeper is not an easy position, as it challenges the individual to learn various techniques and skills needed to prevent the ball from finding the back of the box.
The Grade 11 pupil is starting to rack up the accolades, representing the KZN U18 Wildebeests at this year’s Curro Schools nationals and being selected for the U18 Curro national side.
This on top of making the U18 KZN Country Districts team earlier this year.
Personal ambitions
Looking ahead, the youngster is hoping to study in the medical field,
Music is also a passion.
‘I am studying Grade 5 flute practical and theory, and it is one of my favourites. It offers me a break from my busy schedule. I run two marimba bands at school. We hope to participate in the national band competition at the end of the year.’
Her role models are her parents who support her in all her endeavours.
Hockey season has not stopped for Nagessur yet, as the Grantleigh girls still have to compete in the finals of the SPAR KZN school girls’ Hockey Challenge in Durban from 23 to 24 July.
‘Since it is our first time in a long time making it through to the finals, I don’t expect our team to win, but we will try our best and work as a team to get as far as we possibly can. We have worked hard this season and I hope that our training pays off.’
