Teaching early rugby skills

The official venue of the training still has to be confirmed, but sessions will restart in the new school term.

THERE was an overwhelming turnout at the first session of a Rugby Tots training initiative at the Mtunzini Country Club last Friday.

The programme targets children from two to seven years old and concentrates on ball skills.
Tikes O’Dell has introduced the concept into Zululand, but Rugby Tots was launched four years ago in the Western Cape.

Tikes, who was assisted by Cassie Mahabeer and Mae Doeseb, said that the venue of the training still has to be confirmed, but sessions will restart in the new school term.

A rugby-playing parent, Max Webb, tried to find a pre-school rugby class for his three young boys, but back in 2006 there was nothing of that kind around.

It quickly became clear that he was not the only parent looking for a rugby play programme for younger children and what he had spotted was a very exciting gap in the child development sector.

Seizing the opportunity to start his own business, and fulfill his wish of involving his boys in rugby at a fun and accessible level, Max founded Rugby Tots.

Since then Rugby Tots have grown to around 40 000 children in 16 countries on five continents.

In South Africa, more than 60 franchisees and their coaches deliver more than 2 500 classes per week.

For more information about the programme in Mtunzini contact O’Dell on 083 4065342 or visit the www.rugbytots.co.za.
