Local pupils spark at Curro nationals

Five provinces competed in sevens rugby, hockey and netball, with selection for the various Curro national sides up for grabs.

GRANTLEIGH School sisters Nicole Anderson (U19) and Tasmin Anderson picked up the girls Hockey Player of the Tournament awards whilst representing KZN at the 5th annual Curro National High Schools Tournament played at Grantleigh over the weekend.

Five provinces competed in sevens rugby, hockey and netball, with selection for the various Curro national sides up for grabs.

Wildebeest (KZN), Cubs (Gauteng), Disas (Western Cape), Jacarandas (Pretoria) and Baobabs (Limpopo) competed.
The rugby field produced fast end-to-end action which resulted in a number of tries.

KZN U15 managed to end fourth after losing 12-5 to Jacarandas in the third/fourth play-off.

The KZN U18 team went unbeaten, booking their spot in the finals against Baobabs.

Unfortunately they had to settle for silver after going down 24-17 in a closely contested final.

The netball courts saw KZN U15 losing 17-12 to Baobabs in the finals and the U18 team settling for fifth place.
The boys hockey teams gelled well on the astroturf, however.

The U15 KZN side ended second after going down 3-1 to Disas in the finals, with the U19 side finishing third after beating Jacaranda 1-0 in the third/fourth play-off.

In the girls hockey section, the KZN U15 side ended fourth after losing 2-1 to Jacarandas in the third/fourth play-off, with the U19 side claiming gold after beating Disas 2-1 in a penalty shoot-out.

Grantleigh Schools had 43 pupils representing various KZN teams at the tournament, and had eleven selected for Curro national sides that will tour at the end of the year.
