Richards Bay outfit back in top form
The local outfit, coached by Trevor Montgomery and Kobus Wernig, ran in nine unanswered tries in a solid all round performance.
AFTER losing their unbeaten record to Westville Old Boys (23-19) last weekend, Richards Bay’s rugby team bounced back and drilled UKZN 59-0 to make amends for their mistake and secure top spot on the Fidelity Security First Division log.
The local outfit, coached by Trevor Montgomery and Kobus Wernig, ran in nine unanswered tries in a solid all round performance.
The first half saw the forwards not providing clean, quick ball for scrumhalf JB Heunis, which resulted in a handful of inaccurate passes.
But after fixing that problem in the second half, the home side put on a memorable performance for the home crowd.
They dominated scrums, line-outs, set pieces and loose play which made the students’ lives very difficult.
JP Rossouw, Devon Muller, Rynardt Scheepers, Frank Hughes and Ivan Labuschagne all crossed the chalk in the first half, with Rossouw kicking four conversions (33-0).
The home side stepped up the pace in the second half and ran in more tries by Muller, Kobus Duvenhage, Vitalis Simelane and Jimmy Enslin.
Rossouw managed three conversions to take the score to 59-0.
In the earlier game, Richards Bay 2 gave the students an 80 minute lecture which resulted in a comfortable 49-0 bonus point win.
Captain Michael Horn, Vitalis Simelane, Andre Jacobs, Johannes Brandt, Cassie Naude (Snr), Johny Saaiman and Markus Botes all found their way to the tryline.
Simelane kicked seven conversions.
Richards Bay will host Durban Mets on Saturday at the Richards Bay Rugby Club.
Kick-off times are 1.30pm and 3pm.
