Community cleans up greenbelt litter

Richards Bay residents drive community clean-up campaign in Arboretum

RICHARDS Bay resident Willem Diedricks led a community clean-up campaign in Arboretum on Saturday to clear the greenbelt area leading to Mzingazi Lake.
After visiting the area recently, Diedricks noticed the serious illegal dumping problem in the vicinity opposite Richtek Campus, which also poses a danger to the lake which has underwater springs.
The clean-up operation was supported by the Richards Bay Community Policing Forum, Richards Bay Community Protection Initiative and political parties.
‘This is a sensitive natural ecosystem and we cannot afford to have plastic and other litter clogging up the springs.
‘The area is polluted by masses of rubbish and there are numerous informal settlements which were inhabited by vagrants and left in a terrible condition.
‘We do not want to see this waste end up in the lake.
‘A decade ago, I would visit this area and enjoy the view of the lake and the vast bird life and we want to see this area restored to its former beauty.
‘We are excited to see families join the initiative and educate their children on the severe problem of pollution and illegal dumping.’
Diedricks has issued a stern warning to those who are illegally dumping in the area.
