THE uThungulu Department of Health (DoH) crossed its fingers after receiving multiple nominations at the MEC’s Annual Service Excellence Awards (MASEA) earlier this month.
Held at the Durban Exhibition Centre, the ceremony brings health officials from across the province together to celebrate the previous year’s successes and award high achievers in various categories of health care.
uThungulu Health received nominations and won awards on both district and hospital levels, which local officials believe is a manifestation of hard work and a dedicated workforce.
The district’s achievements included a gold award for reaching Millennium Development Goal 6, which targets tuberculosis, a second gold award for Lower Umfolozi War Memorial Regional Hospital for its work towards improving neonatal outcomes as a regional and tertiary level hospital, and another gold award for its improvement of neonatal outcomes through its milk bank system.
A bronze award for improving neonatal outcomes went to St Mary’s KwaMagwaza Hospital and a certificate of special award to Nkandla District Hospital.
uThungulu Health placed second in KZN for its work in the implementation of the Male Medical Circumcision programme, and was placed fourth in reaching Millennium Development Goal 4; Reduction of Child Mortality.
It also received a certificate of excellence for being among the top four districts that excelled during the Nurse Initiated Management on Anti Retroviral Therapy programme.
