Rapist added to sex offenders register

During trial it emerged that in September last year, Sifiso Mokoena, climbed through the window of a 14-year-old girl's home after midnight and raped her.

AN eSikhaleni man charged with the rape of a minor insists his prison sentence is unjust.

During trial it emerged that in September last year, Sifiso Mokoena, climbed through the window of a 14-year-old girl’s home after midnight and raped her.

The 37-year-old was only arrested three weeks after the incident and, as an alibi, claimed to be sick at the time of the incident.

The Empangeni Magistrates Court found enough compelling evidence, and sentenced him to 15 years imprisonment, added him to the national list of registered sex offenders and declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

Mokoena’s legal representative plans to appeal to the High Court in Pietermartizburg.

He claimed the magistrate erred in analysing the evidence, by rejecting Mokoena’s alibi and by not applying a cautionary rule as the case involved a child and a single witness.

He also alleged the complainant cited different versions of events.
