Rapist lures child with R20

He got away with a light sentence

THE Empangeni Regional Court on Friday sentenced 24-year-old Sandile Sibiya to five years imprisonment for attempted rape, and another five years for sexual assault.

In June 2015, Sibiya lured an 11-year-old girl to a secluded house in Odondolo reserve, Empangeni, under the guise of watching a movie, and later attempted to bribe her with R20.

The girl had been left in his care while the child’s mother, a distant relative of his, was out of town, and the incident was reported a short while after her return.

A second-year student at Unizulu from KwaDlengezwa, Sibiya offered to buy the family a goat after they found out what he had done.

The matter was only reported to the police a month later, on 14 July 2015, and he was arrested the same day.

The court ruled that both his sentences run concurrently, and he will effectively serve a single five-year sentence.
