Crime takes hold in Mtubatuba

An inquest docket was registered following the death of a man during a fire at his home in the Mfekayi area on Friday.

MTUBATUBA SAPS are working towards solving a number of serious crimes and cases opened over the weekend.

An inquest docket was registered following the death of a man during a fire at his home in the Mfekayi area on Friday.

According to Mtuba SAPS spokesperson Captain Justice Hlabisa police officers arrived on scene around midnight to find a large crowd gathered around the home which was ablaze.

‘The deceased was identified as a Pastor Ndlovu. The cause of the fire has not yet been established.’

Charges of murder were also laid against three men following the death of a man on Sunday morning.

Police were called to Mantengu Rental Homes at around 7am.

On arrival they found that a man had been severely beaten by members of the community after he was caught assaulting another man.

‘Our officers received a complaint relating to an assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,’ said Capt Hlabisa.

‘The complainant alleged he was attacked by the suspect while asleep in his room, who broke down his door with a hammer and a bush knife.’

Other residents came to the victim’s aid and armed with rocks and sticks attacked the suspect.

‘The suspect was seriously injured during the fighting and taken to a nearby clinic. He was later transferred to hospital where he died.’

Three men were arrested and will be charged pending a full investigation.

A case of culpable homicide is also being investigated following a serious crash on the N2 between Bhoboza and Nkodibe roads in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to police both drivers of a Ford Fiesta and a Mazda hatchback died, while a passenger in the Mazda survived.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
