Pupils parade freedom right

The 27 April holiday commemorates South Africa's first non- racial democratic elections, which took place in 1994.

PUPILS of Richards Bay Secondary School marked Freedom Day with a parade outside the school on Tuesday morning.

The youngsters greeted motorists with singing and dancing while waving placards and posters which they created to highlight emancipation from poverty, unemployment, racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination.

The 27 April holiday commemorates South Africa’s first non- racial democratic elections, which took place in 1994.

It is significant because it marked the end of over 300 years of colonialism, segregation and white minority rule and the establishment of a new democratic government led by Nelson Mandela, and a new state subject to a new Constitution.

This year South Africa will celebrate Freedom Day under the theme: ‘Together Building Better Communities – Local Government is Everybody’s Business’.
