Parents act at troubled school

Ndabayakhe community held a meeting to discuss the fire incident at Masakhane High School

WEAPON-toting pupils, drug usage and an alarming number of teen pregnancies beset Masakhane High School outside Empangeni, which suffered an arson attack last week.

This led to the Ndabayakhe community holding a meeting at the school on Sunday, to discuss the incident and find resolutions that will avoid such incidents in future.

Ward 29 counsellor Prince Mathenjwa spoke out: ‘While police investigation is ongoing we can’t speculate on the cause of the fire.

‘But we have had reports of drug abuse and weapons at the school, and at one stage pupils attacked each other with bush knives on the school premises.

‘We have now decided to monitor the school. Parents will visit frequently to check how their children behave.’

In March, the community was shocked to learn that 30 girls were reported to be pregnant.

Mathenjwa said a holiday camp will be held for girls, while social workers would assist by sharing information.
