Investigation into teacher beating claims

The Department of Education is investigating corporal punishment claims at Mpephose High School

A MATHEMATICS teacher accused of brutally whipping pupils at Mpephose Secondary School outside Empangeni, will be expelled if investigations by the Department of Education prove the claims to be true true.

Information surfaced last week about the teacher who apparently physically abuses children for failing the subject.

Pupils told the media they receive corporal punishment daily and are now scared to attend school.

‘I told my parents that I am being abused in school because I am not good in maths. I come home in tears every day,’ said one pupil.

Reports also revealed that another pupil was badly injured and could not even sit because of bruises on his buttocks.

According to Department of Education District Director David Chonco, a team of education specialists and social workers will release a formal statement after the inquiry is completed.

‘We were shocked to receive the news and obviously if evidence shows that the teacher is guilty, there will be a dismissal. Our system does not allow corporal punishment in our schools, it is a criminal offence,’ Chonco said.
