Police nab 15 wanted suspects, recover six firearms

A string of police operations in the province have yielded positive results

FIFTEEN of KZN’s most wanted criminals are behind bars after a number of stings conducted by police over the weekend.

According to KZN SAPS spokesman Major Thulani Zwane, the operations began on Friday and ran up until this morning.

‘These suspects were arrested for various crimes ranging from murder, possession of drugs and illegal firearms as well as hijacking and theft of motor vehicles,’ he said.

Ecstasy, Whoonga capsules, crystal meth the value of which is unknown at the time and six illegal firearms were also recovered.

The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences units in the province also celebrated successes last week.

For the month of March 2016, the various units secured nearly 300 arrests and 39 convictions.

‘From 1 to 31 March our FCS members arrested a total of 295 suspects for sexual offences including rape, sexual assault, statutory rape, attempted rape, violation of protection orders, child abandonment and child pornography among others,’ said Zwane.

‘Furthermore, 39 accused were convicted and sentenced by various courts.’

Among these convictions, two suspects received life sentences while a total of 415 years imprisonment was handed down to others.
