SEVEN rifles and two handguns were found in an unsecured safe inside a Richards Bay home recently.
The home belongs to a 39-year-old man who was arrested by the Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit on 16 March after he allegedly raped his 16-year-old stepdaughter.
According to police, while the investigating officer was conducting her investigation, she discovered that the accused was in possession of illegal firearms.
He then led the FCS members on a wild goose chase, telling them the firearms were being kept at a gun store in town.
The guns meanwhile were in a safe in his home.
It is believed the firearms belonged to the accused’s father who passed away and he was in possession of them illegally.
Charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition were added to the rape docket.
The man appeared in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court on 1 April, where he was remanded into custody until his formal bail application today (Thursday).
