TAXI violence that gripped the province last week resulted in one confirmed death during a shootout on the N2 near Eteza.
According to a police officer on scene, taxi drivers got wind of an individual using his private vehicle as a taxi.
In an effort to intimidate the individual and put a stop to his using a private vehicle as a taxi, a taxi driver advanced towards the individual on the N2.
The driver of the private vehicle reportedly drew a firearm as the two vehicles were driving towards each other. A shot was fired and the taxi driver killed.
Two passengers in the taxi were reportedly injured and taken to hospital.
Patrolling police officers escorted the shooter to KwaMsane Police Station where he was, on Wednesday evening, waiting to be arrested.
Reports that a police officer had been wounded in the conflict were not confirmed.
In an earlier incident in Mtubatuba, protesters blocked the R618/John Ross Highway (Riverview Road) intersection.
Armed with bush knives and sticks, the protesters forced passengers out of taxis.
It is unknown whether or not the protesters were taxi drivers.
According to Mtubatuba SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Hlabisa, the chairmen of the Dukuduku and Mtubatuba taxi associations advised their drivers to stay away from work for the day and not join in the protest action.
A number of taxis had been impounded at an impound lot near the Nkodibe bridge in Mtubatuba and the gates to the lot had been set ablaze.
