THE news that our region is being granted R125-million for the improvement of medical service delivery at Ngwelezana and Hlabisa hospitals is very welcome.
The vision, I am sure, is that thousands of community members will have access to more beds, more nurses and better medical equipment.
I have to ask though if this equipment will be maintained and the staff using it will be adequately trained so that they can offer their very best to their patients?
So often, sadly, we hear good news of solid investment in critical services that flounder within a few short years owing to mismanagement, poor infrastructure maintenance and lack of training..
I trust the loyal nursing staff and doctors at the hospitals are going to be armed with the very best information and support so that they can do what they love, and do it effectively.
This is the only way that this money is going to benefit people. There is no value whatsoever in expensive equipment that is not used.
