RICHARDS Bay Christian School and Fish Eagles Swimming Club swimmer Liam Byrne utilised his peak physical condition to propel his way to overall victory at the inaugural Fish Eagles Swimming Club 1 000m swim, recording an impressive time of 12.32.52.
The talented youngster averaged 30.08 seconds per 25 meters.
One-hundred and seven individuals and 28 relay teams participated over the two days at the Empangeni municipal pool.
Entrants completed 40 x 25m widths of the local pool to complete the 1km event.
The aim of the event was to promote growth and development of aquatics within the uThungulu District and raise R100 000 to give back to the local community and invest in future swimmers.
Fish Eagles identified 20 schools as possible beneficiaries of a 2016/17 FESC swimming bursary for one student per school.
The bursary would cover the cost of the students’ registration with Swimming South Africa, KZN Aquatics, uThungulu District Aquatics, Fish Eagles Swimming Club, gala entry fees and club kit, plus free coaching for the season.
A Miss and Mr Fish Eagles 1 000m competition was held on the Saturday with the following results: Lisa Mbhamali (Miss Fish Eagles junior winner), Katelyn Naude (first princess) and Olivia Brits (second princess); Dane Gardner (Mr Fish Eagles junior winner); Megan Boyder (Miss Fish Eagles senior winner), Angelique Kotze (first princess) and Daniel Triggiani (Mr Fish Eagles senior winner), Zoks Mzulwini (first prince) and William van Brakel (second prince).
