YOUNG lives lost to acts of domestic violence will be remembered during the 16 Days of Activism Campaign to end violence against women and children from 25 November to 10 December.
The Reaching Out Domestic Violence and Support Desk in Richards Bay, which assist women, men and children to break the cycle of abuse will launch the campaign at a candle lighting ceremony at uThungulu District Municipality offices on 25 November.
According to founder, Pam Govender, this year’s theme is ‘Peace in the home, peace in the world’ and Reaching Out combined it with the Gender Based Violence Prevention Network’s theme, ‘Power we all have it , how are you using yours?’
In support of the campaign, individuals, businesses , organisation , institutions, schools and corporates are urged to wear the purple and white ribbon to show their commitment to this cause.
‘ Just by simply wearing the ribbon, one becomes part of a global movement to end violence against women and children, and proceeds from the R5 ribbon sales will be divided between Reaching Out and the economic empowerment programme for female survivors of domestic violence.
‘Last year we focused on women who lost their lives to domestic violence, this year we remember the children who died from abuse and acts of violence.
‘ As an organisation that relies on donations, we have to consistently fundraise to sustain the services centre for victims of domestic violence in the area,’ she said.
