THE article in Monday’s paper ‘Proposed fracking meetings scheduled’ should be noted by all conservation conscious Zululanders.
The fracking method of gas exploration is controversial and internationally experts claim it holds serious negative impact for the environment, especially compromising underground water resources.
M-Net’s Carte Blanche aired a very informative programme on the issue two weeks ago, and since vast areas of Zululand might be affected, locals should should arm themselves with knowledge and attend the Rhino Oil and Gas company’s consultation meetings (through SLR Consulting) to ensure meaningful exchange and question claims where necessary.
As most people will be aware, the fracking concept started with applications to explore areas in the Karoo which caused a huge furore.
Disturbingly the government, always keen to support anything likely to bring in the big bucks and jobs, appear to be in favour of fracking with limited effort to ascertain all the facts.
As usual, protecting nature takes a back seat when big money is involved.
The first Zululand meetings were held in Ulundi and Dundee on Wednesday and today (Thursday), but there is still opportunity to make our voices heard on Monday (Pongola’s Thokoza Hall), Tuesday in Melmoth (town hall) and Wednesday (Vryheid’s Eeufees Sport Centre).
