An Olympian in the making

Is Jaron Weyermuller the next Olympian from the Bay?

YOU need no crystal ball to see the World Olympics in Jaron Weyermüller’s future.

The Grade 8 academic and sports protégé of the Richards Bay Christian School (RBCS) is heading one way and that is to the top.

Dubbed ‘The Brain’ by fellow classmates, Jaron clears the trophy tables in sports and academic events virtually effortlessly and still makes time for his unusual hobby – speedcubing.

Jaron has been a pupil of RBCS since Grade R and has set the bar as the highest academic achiever for every year of his school career, with some jaw-dropping results.

In 2015, Jaron completed his Grade 7 year as Dux scholar, snatching up trophies for highest average in English, Afrikaans, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Economic Management Science, Social Science, Art and Culture, Life Orientation and Technology.

He received a distinction (top 3%) in the IEB Mathematics Benchmark Test.

He was also elected Junior Sportsman of the Year, Junior Male Swimmer of the Year and last year participated in SA National Level 3 Championships.

He represented KZN at the SA National Schools Championships and swam the SA Level 2 Championships in Sasolburg.

But that was only his warm-up.

Since November 2015, Jaron made enormous waves in swimming circles.

During the KZN Premier Championships in December at Kings Park, Durban, he bagged a silver for the 200m breaststroke and two bronze medals for the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

At the RBCS inter-house gala in January, he broke records for every event in his age group and was lauded Senior Victor Ludorum.

And then came his best ever performance at the Ushaka Championships, end January, when he snatched up 13 golds, one silver, broke 10 individual records and was part of two record breaking relay teams.

Jaron will again be participating at Level 3 in Port Elizabeth next month (18-23 March).

The prestigious national gala is the highest level one can swim in one’s age group in SA and in six events, he achieved level 3 qualifying times.

On a personal note, friends describe Jaron as hard working, humble, diligent and witty.
