Grade 1s become iPad savvy

RBCS moves with technology

GONE are the days when Grade 1 was only about rolling clay snakes, tying shoe lases, cutting out shapes and colouring inside the lines.

Richards Bay Christian School (RBCS) is moving with technology and the times by familiarising the young ones with iPads.

Technology teacher Cherona Dannhauser said the lessons were a treat.

‘Our aim with Grade 1 iPad facilitation is to slowly get students confident with the swiping, tapping and pinching of gestures.

‘After each lesson, students are given free time to play with pre-loaded apps.

‘In this lesson, we incorporated an application in the iPad lesson with which pupils practise the crossover of the middle line in a fun, effective and

entertaining way.

‘We cross midline when we scratch an elbow, cross our ankles and read left to right – crossing the midline helps build pathways in the brain and is an important skill required for the development of various motor and cognitive skills.

‘Children who have difficultly crossing the body’s midline often have trouble with skills such as reading, writing, completing self-care skills and participating in sport and physical activities.’

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
