Public open space littering an eyesore

City of uMhlathuze has noted with concern the escalating problem of litter being discarded at public open spaces

THE City of uMhlathuze has noted with concern the escalating problem of litter being discarded at public open spaces, recreational areas and near community halls.

Responding to a complaint about rubbish left at the open spaces near the Veldenvlei Community Hall last week, municipal spokesperson Mdu Ncalane said littering has become a common problem, but the city maintains its duty to clean up public areas.

Residents have also complained about loud music at the hall and he advised members to contact the nearest police station if the noise levels are excessive.

‘Looking at the pictures of this litter, this is not at the hall but at public areas nearby where members of the community relax randomly anytime of the day.

‘It is the city’s duty to clean up all public areas and it is possible that these pictures were taken before the clean-up.

‘The community is urged to keep the areas clean and use the dustbins provided.

‘There are no penalties imposed when the outside area to the booked hall is littered, because it is not within the premises of the hall.’
