Four sex offenders get life sentences

A total of 369 arrests and 27 convictions in courts across the province, 306 years of imprisonment were handed down to perpetrators of sex crimes.

FAMILY Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) units around KZN are often the only comfort victims of sex crimes have in their darkest hours.

In a combined effort by all 25 FCS units in the province, four offenders were sentenced to life behind bars while in a total of 369 arrests and 27 convictions in courts across the province, 306 years of imprisonment were handed down to perpetrators of sex crimes.

‘The persistence of the KZN FCS units in solving sexual related cases remain a source of comfort for victims of sexual offences,’ said Brigadier Jay Naicker in a statement.

‘Detectives worked tirelessly to apprehend sexual offenders for cases ranging from rape, attempted rape, kidnapping, sexual assaults and others,’ he said.

The detectives were able to secure life sentences in three cases that were reported between 2009 and 2014.

The Port Shepstone Regional Court convicted and sentenced Themba Dlamini (38) to life imprisonment for raping a then six-year-old child at Mkholombe area in January 2009.

In August 2014, at Mduku Reserve, Sibonelo Ngobese (20) raped two 10-year-old children and was sentenced to life in prison by the Mtubatuba Regional Court.

At Mgababa area in Ntambanana near Empangeni, a 32-year-old male raped and impregnated his cousin in September 2013 after which he was arrested and placed before the Empangeni Regional Court where he was convicted and sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment.
