uShaka Championship gala hotly contested

uShaka Aquatics win uShaka Championship gala in the Bay

OVER 500 swimmers competed in the third annual uShaka Aquatics Championship gala held over the weekend at the Arboretum Municipal Swimming Pool, which saw numerous personal best times being recorded and the host club walking away with the trophy and bragging rights for 2016.

uShaka, Beavers, Westville, Kloof, Seagulls, Blue Ocean, Pongola, Woodview, Vryheid, Fish Eagles and Durban North swimming clubs competed in the SA sanctioned gala with the hopes of qualifying for Levels later this year.

Swimmers competed in 141 events on Saturday and Sunday.

‘The exciting thing is that the uShaka gala grows every year and is an indication that not only swimming in the clubs, but swimming in the district is growing and improving. A testament of this is that uShaka Aquatics won six medals at the KZN Championships in December, which is the first time in 20 years,’ said uShaka Aquatics head coach, Francois Boshoff.

The purpose of the gala was to raise funds for the club, while promoting swimming in the area by attracting clubs from Durban.

uShaka ended up winning the overall gala, with Pongola claiming second and Beavers taking home third.

uShaka Aquatics will be hosting a social gala on Friday, 26 February at the Arboretum Municipal Swimming Pool from 4pm.

All swimmers are welcome.
