Heavy sentences for child rapists

A 22-YEAR-OLD man from Mtunzini was found guilty by the eSikhawini Regional Court of four counts of rape last Monday and sentenced to 48 years imprisonment.
He was accused of raping three children between 2009 and 2012.
The victims, the suspect’s nieces, were between eight and 12 years old and living in the same house as the suspect at the time.
The suspect raped the first victim in 2009 and threatened her not to tell anyone. Fearful of her uncle, she did not report the matter.
Fed up with the abuse, the victims finally reported the incidents to the police in February, 2012.
The Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation and arrested the suspect in the Thongathi area where had gone into hiding after learning the police were looking for him.
• On the same day, a man from Ntambanana was sentenced at the Empangeni Regional Court to life in prison after being found guilty of raping his 16-year-old niece in September, 2013.
