Dope rappers transform every niche

The hip hop culture is far more than cars and women

THIS is definitely not the type of column you think it may be,

It’s not about to confirm your bias opinion about hip hop music or its culture. In fact, this is about the harsher truths – the underlying conflicts that define every argument in hip-hop.

Since its evolution, the culture has spread to both urban and suburban communities throughout South Africa. It has become a business and a way of life for many.

Although most think rap is all about half naked women, vulgar language, bling and baggy saggy pants – the truth is, it’s more a thriving culture, a movement with an ability to convey powerful messages.

Those with strident political opinions who want to make change happen, use the medium to address their cause. It’s about attitudes, experiences and expressing opinions – whether political or religious.

The blunt truth is, it might not be the most well-considered genre of music, but an art form which can influence change. A lot of times, a political message gains power through music.

In our days, every town had a rapper, and every street a back door studio.

It’s no longer about throbbing beats, but mostly about a positive message.

The hip-hop scene has emerged as a circuit where young, talented, and intelligent people can thrive.

Youngsters have adapted the likes of ProVerb, ProKid, Khuli Chana, K.O. and many other successful SA rap artists.

But on the flip side, it still celebrates the accumulation of status, and always has: chains, cars, and yes, women. It is still dominated by young men, in competition to prove their manhood.

In this 21st century, female performers are still offered limited roles in hip hop. Women are underrepresented and considered to contribute less to the genre.

Women are still sidelined and used in videos where they gyrate against male rappers.

The respect towards women still needs some improvement and to be approached in a different manner.
