Education turnaround strategy a priority

KZN legislature is committed to empowering teachers to join hands for a drastic turnaround strategy to improve matric results this year.

THE KZN legislature is committed to empowering teachers to join hands for a drastic turnaround strategy to improve matric results this year.

That was the undertaking by Education Portfolio Committee Chairperson Linda Hlongwa Madlala, who together with KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu and other members of the legislature held a meeting with local principals, School Governing Board representatives and mayors at Dlangezwa High School on Friday.

Madlala said that late arrival at schools, poor attendance and lack of discipline among pupils and teachers are among the key reasons for the poor matric results in the province, issues that need drastic attention.

She also requested parents to get involved and help teachers by attending meetings.

Mchunu said a good work ethic among teachers was imperative for quality education, while principals must actively manage by knowing what is going on in classrooms and not direct operations from the comfort of their offices.

Proper planning, productivity, time management and measures to address weaknesses must be prioritized he said.
