Eight arrested with illicit goods
In the ongoing crack down on counterfeit goods, eight suspects were arrested on Sunday night
AFTER receiving intelligence that contraband was being smuggled into the country, provincial task team members were deployed in uMkhanyakude and on Sunday night arrested eight people and confiscated seven vehicles carrying counterfeit goods.
Both the Provincial Taxi Task Team and National Intervention Unit were deployed to deal with cross-boarder crimes.
On receiving the intelligence and carrying out an investigation, the operation was carried out and the offending suspects were intercepted and arrested between Mbazwana and Hluhluwe.
It is thought they were en route from Manguzi to Durban with the illicit haul.
Among the counterfeit items seized were sports shoes and cosmetics.
The suspects, aged between 24 and 35, were charged with smuggling counterfeit goods and were expected to appear at Ubombo Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni warned the criminals in uMkhanyakude that their days are numbered.
‘Police officers from various provincial teams have been deployed to deal with crimes plaguing the area, especially vehicle-related crimes.
‘Police will be conducting patrols and roadblocks across the area to ensure that those committing cross boarder crimes are brought to book.
‘We appeal to the community to work with the police and provide them with information on known criminals operating in the area.
‘We once again appeal to our communities to not buy stolen goods and contraband.’
