uThungulu chess boffins strategy and tactics tested in Cape Town

Local chess boffins compete at SAJCC in Cape Town

THE uThungulu chess team participated in the South African Junior Chess Championships (SAJCC) at the University of Cape Town Sports Centre from 4 to 7 January.

Owing to the uThungulu District Chess Association/Union only being established in March 2014, many of the players attended the competition for the first time.

With 2 190 players participating, their schedules were very busy each day.

‘I am proud of the team and how they played. We do need to work on a few key areas to improve in strength, strategy and tactics. But the experienced gained from such a prestigious tournament is priceless,’ said uThungulu team coach Lisa Griffiths.

The team of 61 was comprised of players from Empangeni, Richards Bay and Nkandla.

All players will go back to the drawing board and work hard this year before attending the next SAJCC tournament in January 2017.
