Warehouses booked for textbook distributions

Organisation steps in to ensure local schools receive necessary education materials

THIS year, strict measures were taken to ensure no dumping of textbooks leaves scores of local pupils deprived of the necessary tools to thrive in their school careers.

The National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT), which fosters partnerships among business, civil society, government and labour for improved education standards, secured various warehouse facilities in the uThungulu District to efficiently distribute materials to schools before they opened last week.

Interns were recruited and trained in their respective roles to, for instance, check that the couriers delivered the correct supplies timeously.

‘The programme forms part of the support provided to schools by NECT, dedicated to ensure that 90% of learners pass mathematics, science and languages at the 50% level by 2030,’ said the organisation.

‘It is piloted in eight districts, representing 20% of learners nationally.

‘If the programme is successful, it will be rolled out throughout the country.’

NECT in partnership with Department of Education (DBE) commenced the initiative in 2013, where eight districts, including uThungulu, from five provinces were chosen for intervention.
